In a perfect world we would always grab for that carrot stick or piece of fruit. However, living in the modern world food is always around us and we don't always make the best choices. We're inundated with marketing messages that we need to eat this and buy that. And a lot of those foods are hardly 'food' at all. I like to call them franken-foods or highly processed, packaged foods that contain a scary ingredient list.
If you're like me you'll always on the look out for new snack ideas to keep you energized and motivated to get through the day and still be smiling.
Check out my list below and give these real food snacks a try.
Take charge of your health, work hard and feel your best.
1. Apples and Almond Butter
A satisfying, fiber filled snack to keep you full for a while.
The perfect sweet nutty bite to take care of hunger.
2. Butter Lettuce Wraps
This variety of lettuce is one of my favorites. It's helping me stick to my 'big salad a day' routine. Butter lettuce is tender, crunchy and full of dietary fiber, vitamins A, C, K, folate, iron and water. I like to use the leaves as wraps for hummus, cucumbers and sprouts.
3. Raw Nut Trail Mix
Always a great pack a-long snack for the commute home or after a workout. I usually combine pumpkin seeds, unsweetened cranberries or goji berry, walnuts and large coconut flakes.
4. Veggie Sticks and Hummus
Classic, no brainer. Pre-cut veggie sticks make you honor your commitment to add in more real food. Filled with protein, fiber, vitamins and minerals this is a one two punch to stay healthy this season.
5. Green Smoothie
Drink your veggies in a green blend of your favorite variety. Always filling and nutritious. Make you and a your belly happy. One of my favorite blends...spinach, celery, banana, blueberry and flax.
6. Brown Rice Cake with Nut Butter
A salt free brown rice cake with a little nut butter is something that does the trick when I'm hungry before dinner. A healthier snack option when you want something with a crunch.
7. Avocado Toast
One of my all time favorite snacks or pairing with soup and salads. Whole grain toast with a smear of 'nature's mayo' is heavenly. To dial it up to the next level sprinkle with pink sea salt...Yum!
8. A simple piece of seasonal fruit pear, orange or pomegranate
Grabbing for the fruit bowl is always a smart idea. Keep it out where you can pass it often and buy seasonally so it tastes delicious. Right now I'm loving sweet pears and juicy oranges.
9. Veggie Leftovers
Through out the week I roast lots of different vegetables. Having them as extra in the fridge helps me in a pinch to snack on something real. Some of my favorites are broccoli, cauliflower and brussel sprouts.
10. Kale Chips
Crunchy, cheesy and Dorito-like...well almost. Real kale and a sprinkle of nutritional yeast makes for a fun snack. Bake them carefully in a 425 degree oven. Making sure the leaves are dry and not wet (it will make your chips soggy) flipping over half way for about 10-12 minutes.
