This past fall brought on many new changes in my life. A new house, new beginnings and a new town. We moved from our beloved Hoboken city apartment into the quiet suburbs of Cranford, New Jersey.
All beautiful, fortunate events, but also lots to get used to while still working, unpacking and dealing with multiple deadlines and the start of holiday season. Did I mention that we host Thanksgiving each year, as well? Ha! Now, as we settle into the long, cold winter all of that seems to be a big blur.
One constant in my life has always been exercise and moving my body. As I searched for new places to workout, meet new friends and find my fitness community, I stumbled upon Patrick Tuohy and his studio X-tra Mile Fitness. Patrick is a US Marine, with two tours completed in Iraq and is also the Westfield High School Head Lacrosse Coach. His passion and commitment to serve others and teach and condition young athletes is remarkable.
Only steps away from my house I dropped in and learned of their warrior training classes held every Saturday morning and a few times throughout the week. Always one to give new things a try, I laced up my sneakers and showed up on a cold November morning. I soon figured out I was the only girl in class, (no problem) filled with an adorable bunch of college football players, weekend warrior Dad's and five foot tall....me. I'm not too sure what those athletes were thinking, but right away I worked hard and tried my best to keep up with everyone.
At times, I wanted to slow down, throw up and run home, but I kept at it and soon I could even out run a few of the older guys. I'm not sure they liked it, being beat by a girl, but I didn't care. I felt strong, healthy and energized. We jumped over hurdles, flipped tires, ran with sandbags on our shoulders, did countless pushups and pulled a heavy chain with kettlebells attached at the end. Now after a few months of training with coach Matt and all the others, they have become my new fitness family. I go each Saturday morning and it sets my weekend off in a healthy direction.
Moving out of Hoboken has been an adjustment, but finding this place has given me so much joy. And knowing that they are right around the corner, it makes exercising easy. Thank you Xtra Mile Fitness for providing me with such a warm welcome, an intense introduction to the 'Prowler' and consistant encouragement to stay fearless, strong and live well.
