How to save money, eat clean and use what you have.
If you are living in or near New Jersey this is a perfect week to tackle the freezer...this heat is making it feel like August. Go ahead and dive in!
My adventures in the kitchen are always changing. And that's a good thing.
I try to keep things simple and save money when I can, using fresh real food ingredients and pantry staples.
My most recent dive into the freezer yielded me some really great finds. Underneath all the frozen cashews and veggies burgers, I found treasure. I felt like I struck gold. Some half eaten bags of frozen fruit, almost not meant for human consumption, but perfect for a afternoon smoothie fix.
It happens each season. I try and clean out the old before bringing in the new. This way of living makes me happy and helps organize my life. Giving me just enough false sense of control that I can carry on about my day with my head up high and a smile on my face.
My seasonal clean-outs of fridge, freezer and pantry make for some interesting meal ideas, but always save me money. And who doesn't love that?!! Since moving out of Hoboken and into the suburbs I find that I'm not always passing a store. So I've limited my shopping days to 1 or 2 days per week. I hate driving to the store. That way I can batch my trips in the car and limit the crazy grocery store runs.
This week's freezer dive gave me a fantastic raspberry, peach and orange smoothie. An excellent way to use what's on hand and get me through the work day. I also was able to plan other meals, rotate some things I need to eat and chuck things that had seen better days.
What are you neglecting in your freezer? Have you ever done a freezer or fridge dive?
Wishing you success in the land of freezer burn, ice cream and ice packs.
Make this week, happy, healthy and budget friendly!
